The drug maker Pfizer said Tuesday that it will pay $1.4 billion to settle U. S. civil lawsuits accusing the drug giant of conspiring with competitors to fix its drug price, and to block the company from marketing its generic drug Viagra.

The drug maker said its other alleged conduct was also alleged to have been for off-label marketing and promotion of a generic version of the drug.
Pfizer and the drug makers are expected to make a public statement on Tuesday about the settlement, but haven’t yet.
The company said its price-fixing program was designed to help consumers who have lost money on drugs, including Viagra, by helping consumers save money on drug costs. Those savings may be used to offset losses by insurers, employers and other purchasers of prescription drugs.
